Visual Arts

Welcome to the Visual Arts Department!

Art is all around us and is an integral part of our lives. Powerful visual images surround us, communicating to us and challenging viewers with personal artistic visions.   It is impossible to conceive of a world without art.  There will always be a need for art education, the processes may change, but traditional art forms will always be part of society.

Students want to learn art.  In the art program students will learn to be creative, be in touch with all of their senses, develop hand to eye coordination and learn to problem solve. Art helps students understand what is really inside them, and gives them an opportunity to express their thoughts and feelings in a variety of media.

At SDSS our hope is to foster in our students a love of creativity and the ability to think outside the box! All students have what it takes to be creative;   Art gives them self-esteem and confidence which can be applied to other disciplines.  It exercises the left side of the brain where problem- solving and spatial relationships take precedence.  Art making skills are closely related to mathematical thinking.  A lot of studio time is spent in creative problem solving.   It enables students the ability to face the myriad of new challenges that the future brings.  Art is preparation for the future! Art improves one’s quality of living! Art brightens the world! Art is important!

Guest Artists

  • Students will meet local artists so they may share their experiences with students!

Portfolio Preparation

  • This allows students to save their art work in a safe place so when the time comes, they are able to display it to a post secondary school if they so choose!

Art and Photo Contests

  • These events encourage students to continue to try their best

School Beautification

  • Other departments display beautiful art created by Stouffville students that last for years to come!  It is a neat experience for students to walk by and see an art display that they had a part in making!

Art Awards at Commencement

  • Art students are rewarded for their passion of art!

Latcham Gallery Art Show

  • In grade 12, students have the opportunity to create several pieces of art to display at the Latcham Gallery!  This is a very special event, considering that not many people in general can say they have had their own art show before.  This occasion is very important to students who are considering going into art after secondary school.

Why Choose Art?

Every day is an adventure in the art room!  By taking art, students are able to learn in a ‘hands-on way’ and meet people with the same interests as them!  Students have the opportunity to take part in many activities such as, going to the zoo, playing with clay, create chalk art in the outdoor classroom, mummify cats and so much more!  The art department allows everyone to try new things, explore and get messy!  Students will recreate a famous piece of art with acrylic paint and include a cow to make it their own!  They will also learn how people lived during Ancient Egypt – this includes the famous King Tut!  Students have the chance to show off and develop their talent by displaying their art in our very own display case!  As soon as you step into the art room, you are guaranteed to have a fabulous time!
